Using FireLearn without an account

You can study without an account. Your learning progress, rounds in progress, game scores and settings are then stored only in your browser’s local storage (localStorage) and are not sent to us. You can delete them at any time by clearing the site data in your browser.

Account and sign-in

We use Clerk (Clerk, Inc., USA) for sign-in. You can sign in with your email address or with a Google, Microsoft or TikTok account. Clerk processes your email address, your name and profile picture if applicable, and technical sign-in data. If you sign in through one of these providers, Clerk receives only these basic details from them (for TikTok: an identifier, display name and profile picture); we do not access your content there and do not post anything on your behalf. Clerk sets cookies that are necessary for signing in.

What we store about your account

When you are signed in, we store the following against the user ID assigned by Clerk:

  • the study sets, flashcards and folders you create or edit,
  • your learning progress, your answers, rounds in progress and recently opened sets,
  • game scores and settings,
  • your subscription and your AI allowance usage (see below).

This lets you carry on studying on any device. The data is held in a database from Neon (Neon, Inc., USA) with its servers in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. It stays stored until you delete your account or ask us to delete it.

Profile, sharing and public sets

If you create a profile, your username, display name, profile picture and your public sets and folders are visible to everyone at firelearn.app/u/<username> and can be found in search. Sets are private until you share them: anyone with the link can view sets shared by link, and public sets also appear in search. You can change this at any time.

Live games

In a live game, we store the name you enter when joining, your answers and your points for the duration of the game. The other participants can see your name and score. So that changes arrive instantly, we use Ably (Ably Realtime Ltd., United Kingdom); only short signals and the score visible to everyone pass through Ably, never hidden answers.

AI features: providers

For the AI features, we pass content on to the following providers:

  • DeepSeek (Hangzhou DeepSeek Artificial Intelligence Co., Ltd., China): texts for the AI assistant, the outline and script of AI podcasts, answers to questions in the podcast, and wrong answer options for tests and games.
  • OpenRouter (OpenRouter, Inc., USA), which forwards requests to Google language models (Gemini, Google LLC, USA): speech output, speech recognition and the AI quiz. If OpenRouter is unavailable, we use Google directly.

China does not offer a level of data protection equivalent to Swiss law. So please do not enter any personal data in AI features that you do not want to be transmitted. The AI features are optional; everything else works without them. For each AI request, we store the type, scope and cost together with your user ID, in order to calculate your allowance and the cost of the service.

AI assistant

The AI assistant is available only to signed-in users. Your messages and the text of any attached document are sent to DeepSeek to generate answers and flashcards. The PDF itself is read only in your browser; the text extracted from it is what gets transmitted. FireLearn does not store the chat history, only the sets that the assistant creates for you.

For tests and games with multiple-choice answers, FireLearn sends the cards of a set to DeepSeek to generate suitable wrong answers. These are stored with the set.

AI podcast

With a subscription that includes AI features, you can have a podcast created from a study set. To do this, we store an unchangeable copy of the cards used, of any additional texts and files you provide (for files, only the text read in your browser), and of your requests for the podcast. DeepSeek writes the outline and script from this; the script is converted into speech via OpenRouter. The audio files are stored with Cloudflare R2 (Cloudflare, Inc., USA; storage location Europe) and can only be accessed through time-limited links.

In interactive mode, you can interrupt the podcast and ask a question. The microphone is active only while recording. The recording is sent to OpenRouter solely for conversion to text and is not stored by FireLearn; the recognised or typed question text and the answer are stored. DeepSeek answers the question based on the podcast’s sources, and the answer is read aloud.

If you delete a podcast, its audio, script, copy of the sources, listening progress and questions are deleted.

AI quiz

In the AI quiz, an AI asks you questions about a study set out loud. To do this, we store an unchangeable copy of the cards used and of any additional texts and files you provide, the questions created and your results. Questions, explanations and assessments are generated by a Google language model via OpenRouter, which also reads them aloud. We save the spoken questions with Cloudflare R2 so that they do not have to be generated again each time.

The microphone stays on during the quiz so that you can interrupt the AI at any time. Your browser itself detects whether you are speaking; only what you say is sent to OpenRouter so that it can be understood and assessed. FireLearn does not store the recordings, only the recognised text in the quiz history.

Subscription and payment

Subscriptions are billed through Stripe (Stripe Payments Europe, Ltd., Ireland). You enter your payment details, such as card number or TWINT, in a Stripe payment field embedded in FireLearn; FireLearn does not receive them. We store the Stripe customer number, your plan, the status of your subscription and its term, in order to activate the subscription; Stripe sends receipts to your account’s email address. Stripe also processes data under its own responsibility, for example to prevent fraud and because of statutory retention obligations.

Hosting, server logs and statistics

FireLearn is hosted by Vercel (Vercel Inc., USA). When you visit the website, technically necessary data such as your IP address, the time, the address requested and browser details are processed in order to deliver the site and protect it from misuse.

For simple visitor statistics, we use Vercel Web Analytics. It counts page views without cookies and without recognising you across several days or websites; we see only aggregated figures, such as which pages are viewed how often, from which country and on which type of device.

Fonts

The fonts “Plus Jakarta Sans” and “Instrument Serif” are loaded from Google Fonts (Google LLC, USA). Your IP address is transmitted to Google in the process.

No advertising

FireLearn shows no advertising, uses no advertising trackers and does not sell data. We set cookies only where they are necessary for signing in.

Disclosure abroad

Some of the service providers mentioned are based in the USA, the United Kingdom or China; Stripe is based in Ireland (EU). The United Kingdom offers an adequate level of data protection. For the USA, where providers are certified, we rely on the Swiss-U.S. or EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework, and otherwise on the standard contractual clauses. For transmission to DeepSeek, the note under “AI features: providers” applies.

Your rights

You can at any time

  • request information about the data stored about you,
  • have incorrect data corrected,
  • request deletion of your data and your account,
  • request your data in a common format,
  • object to processing.

To do so, write to hello@firelearn.app. You can also complain to the Federal Data Protection and Information Commissioner (FDPIC) or, if you live in the EU, to the supervisory authority in your country.

Changes

We will update this statement if FireLearn or the services we use change. The version published here at any given time applies.
